Kaisarios Daponte

The Skopelitan scholar monk Kaisarios Daponte was born in Skopelos around 1713-14. His father Hatzi-Stephanis Daponte is the founder and renovator of the holy monastery Euaggelismos of Skopelos.

Konstantinos Daponte travelled a lot in the principalities of the Danube area and gathered a great knowledge on many subjects. As well as his travel experiences his social experiences appear in his work, which is written in prose but also in metrical verse form.

He is characterized by his selectivity and discretion, which show, in his work, but also by the way he lived and associated with those around him. He resembles the bee, which never gets tired of moving and choosing the best, the purest, the most beautiful.

He tries and faces everything but chooses and uses that which is pleasing to God, the ideal.

He longs to teach and help others through his writings. He narrates his experiences, not to take pride in himself and to boast, but to set examples for others less fortunate.

Disappointed by the wickedness and ill will of people he retreated to Piperi (a small island of the Northern Sporades) to live in solitude and dedicate himself to god who always understands, always supports, and always loves. He adopted the name Kaisarios and went to his father's monastery Evaggelismos to write his pieces of work.

In his capacity as monk he began the writing of morally uplifting and other religious poems. So he praised the cross of the Lord, the Mother of God, the churches and monasteries. In his works he never forgets to praise and to yearn for his birthplace Skopelos.

He is proud of his origin and his faith.
