What is Mom

Mom, the Association for the study and protection of the Mediterranean Seal, is a greek charity, an not governmental environmental organization that was founded in 1988, from a team of biologists, researchers of the Marine environment.

Aims of Mom are the study and acquisition of knowledge about biology, ecology, and behavior of the species and its protection with the help of all legal means. From 1994 on Mom is a member of the EUCC (European Union for Costal Conservation) while in 1996 it was excepted as member of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), as a non-governmental organization with national range.

Mom's financial means result from the subscriptions and donations of most of their more than 5.000 members, supporters of its activities, from state and private bearers and from its corporation with the state and the European Unity.

What threatens the seal

Centuries has passed since Homer described in the Odyssey an idyllic everyday picture of the Greek Coastline of his epoch. Then, the Mediterranean Seal was protagonist in life. In our times the Monachus Monachus is the number one among the species threatened with elimination in Europe.

Basic menace for the seal is human activities: their intentional killing, the lack of available food, their random capture in fishing nets. Likewise the pollution of the sea and uncontrolled tourism which cause the destruction of their natural living space.

Because the Mediterranean seal is placed at the top of the ecological pyramid it can be considered a health indicator of the marine environment. Its disappearance is the preamble for its destruction.

How you can help
