SKOPELOS, THE HISTORICALITY OF DAILY LIFE, THE CRAFTMANS RECITATIONS

The material culture of Skopelos includes all the items that sailors brought from their long journeys and are now in the homes of the most affluent families on the island, and what have been produced for decades by artisans and craftsmen who continue local traditional production with their often basic equipment and they do their work with basic tools the oral knowledge of tradition from memory, as an accumulated technical and morphological experience.

Through the stories of the thirty-three craftsmen of Skopelos, the common path of apprenticeship, the intercourse, the mobility, the standard of living, the affinities in the closed circle of the island are detected.

These elements have formed a single framework, which is reflected in the way in which they embrace their daily lives but also in solidarity and the tolerance they developed among themselves in times of tension and rupture when they took part in the struggles, regardless of the political space in which they were integrated.

Skopelos. The Landscapes and Vernacular Architecture of an Aegean Island

Marc Held

Interested in vernacular architecture, he dedicated a widely acknowledged book on Greece, Maisons de Skopelos, précis d'architecture in 1994, to it.

Marc Held - Skopelos (English and French Edition)

Designer of the famous Culbuto armchair manufactured by Knoll, Marc Held is also the architect of eight spectacular villas in Greece

Beautiful pictures of Greek contemporary architecture and landscapes

This book pays homage to the complete journey through the creation of eight villas including drawing, plans, and pictures
Marc Held made history in 1965 with his famous Culbuto armchair and followed it in 1966 with furniture manufactured by Prisunic.

Over a period of fifty years, he created some 150 furniture pieces, notably participating in the interior design of the apartments in the Élysée Palace in 1983. Beginning in the 1970s, he also designed singular works of architecture, for individuals and for corporate clients such as IBM. At the end of the 1980s he chose to focus entirely his passion when he settled on the Greek island of Skopelos. Interested in vernacular architecture, he dedicated a widely acknowledged book on Greece, Maisons de Skopelos, précis d'architecture in 1994, to it.

It was also on Skopelos where over a period of thirty years he built eight exceptional villas: Lemonia, Maistros, Nina, Loukas, The Temple, Mourtia, Myrto and Kapsari. Each house is an architectural manifesto in its own right. These eight villas, in spectacular locations beside the sea, built with local materials and in accordance with the construction techniques of the island - all the artisans were from there - with the magical landscapes in which they are integrated, are eight lessons on the notion of genius loci, which so inspired Marc Held's architecture.

Photographed by Deidi von Schaewen - with spectacular shots taken via drone-mounted cameras - his eight beautiful villas are also presented with his drawings and plans developed during their conception phases.

Gates of the Wind - Michael Carroll

About the book

Greek fishermen call the Northern Sporades the Gates of the Wind and Michael Carroll in his 30 foot sailing boat Astarte - designed and built in England to his own specifications, part Cornish fishing boat, part Greek caique - moved about amongst them looking for a perfect anchorage only to find that this search became a quite different kind of quest.

His chance meeting and subsequent friendship with the versatile Greek, Vangeli, on the island of Skopelos, led to a far more ambitious plan to buy a piece of land. It also led to the building of a house one the shores of the remote cove of Panormos - the perfect anchorage - once the site of an ancient city.

The author’s gradual integration with the people of the island; his dramatic and amusing part in involvement in the life of the island as it becomes his home make this a most unusual book about Greece. With the acquisition of the land comes the realization of what means to have roots and to be an islander.

The author writes vividly of the other islands and their inhabitants; of taking part in a goat hunt, laying up Astarte for the winter and the actual building of the house. His first book from a Persian Teahouse was an account of Travel. In this book he is not so much a traveler as one who has arrived.

About the Author

Michael Carroll was born in England in 1935 being of Irish, Scottish and English extraction. His father’s family lived in Yoghal, Country Cork. He has educated at Harrow and Cambridge but spent much of his early life in India where his father was administrator of a Feudatory State. While at Cambridge he traveled widely on the continent during his vacations. He made one full-scale journey in Persia, which resulted in his book From a Persian Tea-House.

He is married with one child.

Over Blue Aegean Waters

Griffith Eugene Harlow

A Fifty Year Romance with the Greek Island of Skopelos

Romance: love, excitement, humor, heartbreak, passion.

Skopelos: glistening blue water, rich green foliage, picturesque, friendly, appetizing food, traditional, sophisticated.

Shortly after marrying into a Greek-American family the author was indoctrinated through stories, old maps and property descriptions; and learning Greek. Within a few years he was traveling to Greece following Dad’s entreats to "show face and protect the property" and speaking "goat Greek." Inheriting the family house, a so-called "hovel", nearly became a Greek tragedy.

The amusing tales include:
  Mother’s goat bag.
Grocery store that serves free alcoholic aperitifs in the morning.
Squatters attempting to seize family property.
  "Zorro" the plumber.

Aegean Dream: The true story of a year on the 'Mamma Mia' island

Dario Ciriello

The Essential, Must-Read True Story Set on Greece's real 'Mamma Mia' island of Skopelos

In November 2006, Dario and Linda move to the tiny Greek island of Skopelos hoping to start a new life in paradise. The Greek Gods have other ideas.

Comic and tragic by turns, Aegean Dream is a bittersweet story of love, resilience, and the power of friendship, a true-life memoir with all the attributes of a compelling novel. A compelling window on the daily life of a small Greek island and the spirit of its people, this book also provides striking insights into the broken institutions that would soon shake the entire global economy.

- What’s it really like to live on a tiny Greek island? - Why is the Greek economy so messed up?- What IS ‘The Secret’?...and what do mysterious skulls, Russian prostitutes, President Bush the elder, and Pierce Brosnan have to do with it all?

An unforgettable, unvarnished memoir about laughter, food, love, and loss. Reviewers say:
"Aegean Dream is a riveting, heartbreaking tale that goes beyond the standard idyllic travelogue and delves beneath the surface of what it means to be a Greek. An outsider's view of someone pressing their nose against the window of another culture and peering longingly inside and almost, but not quite being allowed in. An intense, finely wrought book that's impossible to put down, rife with comic and tragic elements, told by a wise and fearless narrator. Travel writing at its best!"

"It made me laugh, it made me cry, and I never stopped rooting for them. We all have dreams and so often don't follow them only to regret it later in life. This couple were following their dream and you just can't help but get emotionally involved with the outcome. Mr. Ciriello is a darn good writer. His book,"Aegean Dream", deserves to be read. You won't regret it. It is every bit as entertaining and well written as 'A Year in Provence'."

"I loved this book and almost shed a tear at the end. This is not a sad book but an honest portrayal of how difficult it is to fit in with a different culture. The high spots of their life there are lovingly told and I felt as frustrated as they were when the low spots hit. I found it uplifting."
"I was hooked on this book from the start."
Dario Ciriello's 'Aegean Dream'. All story. All true.

Skopelos: An Alluring Greek Island in the Aegean Sea

by Ann St Clair (Narrator), Jesse Sisken (Goodreads Author) (Photographer)

Skopelos: An Alluring Greek Island in the Aegean Sea is a book of striking images and insightful text that portray the beauties, history and culture of one of the most interesting, but lesser known and least exploited of the Greek islands. Much of this book is devoted to depicting Skopelos’s ancient monasteries, churches, and family chapels in their unique settings and wonderful variety. There are more than 350 such ecclesiastic buildings on this island of less than 6,000 people, a tribute to the place of religion in its people’s lives. This book also takes the reader into the centuries-old, narrow, winding, back streets of Skopelos’s two major towns where one can sense age-old traditions and enjoy a certain tranquility not found in more modern and traveled areas like the island’s thriving waterfront. And throughout, the reader is introduced to Skopelos’s culture and history with Its numerous architectural and archaeological treasures, footprints left behind by Minoans, Mycenaeans, Romans, Venetians and Turks, who have all been there.
But, as described, there is much more to Skopelos, from its secluded pristine beaches and aquamarine waters to its quiet, uniquely forested hillsides. For evening fare, one can dine on traditional Greek food at waterfront tavernas while listening to water lapping against the shore and watching the sun set into the sea, leaving a crimson and golden sky behind. Skopelos is a place where visitors can step from one era into another, listen to the quintessential sound of goat bells echoing across the hillsides, or to disco music emanating from nightclubs tucked away in cobblestoned alleys. This is an island not to be missed, and this book shows why.
