HOW TO GET HERE

In this section, you will find basic information on how to reach Skopelos, Skiathos and Alonissos, the islands of the Northern Sporades.

Here you can find an overview of ferry connections to the Northern Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos) from and to the ports of Volos and Mantoudi (Evia – Kymasi) for travelers coming from Athens and Thessaloniki.

For Skyros, access is via the port of Kymi.

At this point, you will find general information, while in the “By Ferry” section you can read more detailed information about routes and available options.

Skopelos is located between Skiathos and Alonissos, in the heart of the Northern Sporades.

The island has three main ports: Skopelos Town (Chora), Glossa (Loutraki) and Agnontas, which serve the ferry connections.

You can travel to Skopelos, as well as to Skiathos and Alonissos, by conventional ferries, highspeed ferries, high-speed vessels (catamarans) and hydrofoils. In addition, Skiathos has an airport with daily flights from Athens and direct international flights during the tourist season.

The peak tourist season in Skopelos is July and August. It is highly recommended to book your return tickets in advance, especially between August 1st and 30th, to avoid inconvenience due to high demand.

1. The main port of Skopelos (Chora), the travel times below are calculated for this port in case the ship after Skiathos approaches the Glossa port Loutraki. If going directly Chora the country, calculate 20m less time.

2. Glossa port ( Loutraki seaport port of Glossa village ). In the following times, calculate 30m less time.

3. The port of Agnontas ( a south west port which is used on some days when the north winds hinder the approach to the harbor of Skopelos). Also is used for some itineraries from Evia Mantoudi and for some occasional afternoon ferry departures from Volos..

Skopelos does not have an airport. The nearest airport is located on the island of Skiathos, Skiathos National Airport “Alexandros Papadiamantis” (JSI), which also serves the Northern Sporades islands.

Another nearby airport is Nea Anchialos Airport (Volos – VOL). In addition, many international visitors choose to travel via Athens or Thessaloniki and then continue their journey to Skopelos either by flying to Skiathos (and then taking a ferry), or by traveling overland to the ports of Volos and Mantoudi (Evia), from where ferry connections are available.

USEFUL INFORMATION

You can purchase your ferry tickets in the following ways:

a) Online booking. Most ferry companies now offer electronic tickets (e-tickets) and Web Check-in, so printing is usually not required. In some cases, ticket collection at the port before departure may still be necessary.

b) Directly from authorized travel agencies of the ferry companies.

c) Through online ferry search platforms, where you can easily compare routes, prices and availability in real time.

During the winter period, ferry connections to Skopelos and Alonissos operate mainly from the port of Volos, while Skiathos also serves as an important connection point.

The islands of the Northern Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos) are connected to each other by regular ferry services, making it easy for visitors to travel between the islands.

You can reach Volos from Athens either by intercity bus (KTEL) in approximately 4 hours, or by train via the route Athens – Larissa – Volos, with a connection. From Thessaloniki, access is available year-round either by train (via Larissa) or by intercity bus (KTEL) from the Macedonia Bus Station, with a travel time of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.

Alternatively, there are ferry connections via Mantoudi (Evia). You can reach Mantoudi from Athens by KTEL Evia, while ferry routes to Skopelos operate up to 2 times per day during the summer and are usually reduced to around 2 departures per week in winter.

It is recommended to check schedules in advance, especially during the winter period.

Ferry schedules, unlike flight schedules, are announced gradually for each season.

In recent years, the situation has improved, as most summer routes are published earlier. However, their full finalization usually takes place close to the Easter period.
