SKOPELOS SIGHTSEEINGS

SKOPELOS
BEAUTIFUL NATURE & WONDERFUL ROUTES

ROUTES ON SKOPELOS, SIGHTS OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL (CHORA). In such an environment such as that of Skopelos, routes constitute a special experience. In fact, those of you who love walking will find several trails (which in recent years are constantly emerging) and wonderful routes mainly on Mount Palouki .

The whole island is covered by pine forests and this makes the route from the capital (Chora) of Skopelos to Loutraki –along 37 km of main roads- a wonderful experience for all the senses, as the visitor has the ability to marvel at the lush nature of Skopelos but also its coasts which, in their majority, are on the south side of the island.

Starting out from Chora and following the main roads leading to Loutraki, one comes across many beautiful beaches of the island. Initially, the Stafylos beach and then Agnontas with its picturesque port.

Between Stafylos and Agnontas and following a detour of the main road -directly after the bends- the visitor can find himself in the area of Drakontoschisma, and following the dirt track the small rocky beaches of Amarantos.

Let us note that this is the magnificently beautiful area where Mamma Mia was filmed.

Leaving Agnontas behind, one can see Limnonari beach from high up.

To get down to Limnonari, one must leave the main road following the directions on the signpost to the right of the road, and follow the tarmac but relatively narrow road leading to the beach.

Continuing the route from Skopelos to Loutraki, the visitor comes across the large beach of Panormos, the small beaches Antrines and then Milia , turning right at the relevant signpost and Kastani, a beach now known from the movie Mamma Mia that was filmed here.

Continuing the route, we meet Elios, (22 km), a settlement that has been built in a beautiful location, directly below the Vathias forest on the mountain Delfi, full of pines; next to that, the beach of Chovolos, with its unique and wonderful water tones.

After Elios is Palio Klima (28 km), an old settlement which maintains the elements of traditional architecture with a view to Skiathos and Evoia.

Finally, Glossa (35 km), almost on the other side of the island, which is the second most populated village on the island, built 250 m from the sea on a slope smothered in pines, fruit trees, ravines and so many sycamore trees that it was once named Platana.

After Glossa the road ends on Loutraki village ( Glossa's port ) , a a peaceful place.

Let us note that near Glossa there are two important sights, the chapel of Ai Giannis at Kastri, built on a rock and celebrating on August 29, and the lighthouse on the Gourouni peninsula, built in 1889 and made up of the main building and the 14-metre high tower.

In 1989 the lighthouse operated automatically after one century with electricity and the lighthouse guards from Glossa deserted it. In 1996 the Ministry of Culture characterized it as a historical protected monument.

In the area near Glossa there are more wonderful beaches (as well as others in the northern part of the island)
